We met through an Indonesian government scholarship program, Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA), in 2021 at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States of America. We got inspired by one of the objectives of our program, which is community engagement. At the same time, we had the aspiration to give back to our home country since we acknowledged that many people in Indonesia still face difficulties in accessing the resources which we fortunately have.

After a series of discussions about the ideas, project designs, mechanisms, and so on, we finally established our platform, Fokalogi Indonesia, into reality. It has been running since October 2021, and as of now, we are currently working on a program focusing on youth empowerment to build their English speaking skill through one-on-one conversational sessions.

 

We want to help people in Indonesia to have a space where they can practice their English comfortably since we noticed that in the community we live in, it is very hard for the youth to develop their confidence in speaking English due to a constant judgment from the people surrounding us which then became a big obstacle for them to improve their skills. We believe this problem should be addressed as soon as possible to break the problematic chain. 

 

As we rely on an online-based meeting platform, we are very flexible, and our goal is to reach out to as many people as possible and connect them to the people across Indonesia and even globally. We have connected people from the edge west of Indonesia to the middle part of Indonesia and successfully conducted them virtually.
